Sheffield Wednesday posted a creditable point at newly-promoted Peterborough on Saturday.

Midfield man James O'Connor's maiden goal for the Owls midway through the first half sent Wednesday into the lead but Craig Mackail-Smith - Posh's leading scorer last season - headed home on the hour to give Peterborough a deserved share of the spoils.

Darren Ferguson's side started their home campaign brightly, with the dangerous figure of Mackail-Smith sending over an inviting cross for Aaron Mclean that was just a shade too high for the striker to gain a good connection.

Tommy Rowe went close a minute later as the hosts continued on the front foot and Mclean broke free 20 yards out to fire a clever lob that evaded Lee Grant but landed on the top rather than in the back of the Wednesday net.

Against the run of play, though, Wednesday went into the lead from their first meaningful attack on 21 minutes. Marcus Tudgay found space down the right and fed O'Connor with an accurate cross that the Irishman neatly dispatched into the corner with a well-placed glancing header.

The contest settled into an even affair as neither goalkeeper was troubled from open play. Both sides forced a string of corners, none of which led to anything clear cut in the danger areas.

That was until the 44th minute when Charlie Lee had a good opportunity to draw Posh level but the midfielder mistimed his header from Tom Williams' corner and the Owls went into half time a goal to the good.

Posh started the second period as they did the first by going close almost from the kick-off. And Mackail-Smith should have done better after bursting down the right side of the penalty area but his tame shot screwed harmlessly wide.

Wednesday responded with in-form makeshift striker Jermaine Johnson forcing Joe Lewis into a diving save before Peterborough equalised in the 61st minute. Williams went on an enterprising run down the left and sent a superb cross to the back post, where Mackail-Smith climbed high to head past Grant.

The London Road crowd was buoyed by the leveller and their side began to enjoy the upper hand. Only a last-ditch Darren Purse block prevented a George Boyd scorcher from finding the target on 72 minutes and the lively Mickail-Smith continued to stretch the Wednesday backline.

Tudgay fired a set piece that brought a good save from Lewis as the Owls upped their offensive threat, while Peterborough too were far from content with a point.

But both defences were well marshalled by the respective skippers Purse and Zakuani and a point apiece was probably the right result.
