Sheffield Wednesday saw their 2010/11 campaign off to a flier as they overcame newly-promoted Dagenham & Redbridge at Hillsborough.
Early goals from debutants Giles Coke and Clinton Morrison were enough to beat the Essex side, who offered little resistance in a contest the hosts largely dominated.
Alan Irvine named five of his nine new recruits for the visit of the Daggers - Nicky Weaver, Coke, Gary Teale, Chris Sedgwick and Morrison - and the revamped Owls made a steady if unspectacular start to the game in warm S6 conditions.
But as the early exchanges unfolded, Wednesday started to exert some authority and suddenly sparked the game into life with two goals in three minutes.
First, on 12 minutes, Teale picked out the onrushing Coke from a corner and the former Motherwell man slotted home with the aid of a deflection from the unfortunate Scott Doe in the six-yard box.
Then it got better for Wednesday just three minutes later as Morrison also marked his debut with a goal. Teale swung over a deep, hanging cross to the back post, where Sedgwick neatly found Morrison and the striker swivelled to fire low past Tony Roberts.
The Daggers were on the backfoot and Morrison could have made it three with a snapshot volley after good work from Marcus Tudgay but Roberts was down sharply to deny the Irish international.
The Dagenham keeper went one better just before the half-hour mark, showing fine reflexes to palm Tudgay's powerful header over the bar as Wednesday kept their foot to the floor.
The visitors struggled to cope with the pressure and the game settled into something of a lull as half time approached.
But just as a warning against any hint of complacency for the Owls, Romain Vincelot found room inside the box to slot wide past Weaver when the Frenchman might have done better.
The second half began in much the same way as the first, with Wednesday edging possession only this time without the real threat in front of goal.
Irvine was of similar mind and after a tepid opening 15 minutes made a change - loanee striker Neil Mellor replacing Morrison in the final third. Darren Potter then came on for midfield counterpart James O'Connor.
But the spark was missing from Wednesday's play, albeit the same could be said for Dagenham, who looked bereft of ideas once the ball entered the Owls' half.
The Daggers had a brief flurry 15 minutes from the end with two whipped-in crosses from the left but with Mark Beevers and Darren Purse in dominant mood, Weaver's goal was never truly threatened.
From the Owls' perspective, neither was Roberts' - but the earlier first half flurry proved sufficient to ensure that Wednesday kicked off the season with maximum points.
