Giles Coke came off the bench to score his second goal in as many games and secure a 1-0 win and Wednesday's place in the hat for the second round of the Carling Cup, in a tight affair against a valiant Bury side at Hillsborough.

The ex-Motherwell man made a cameo appearance in the second half and capped a mazy dribble down the left with a crisp left-footed finish on the hour mark to settle the tie.

Owls boss Alan Irvine made six changes to the side that claimed an opening day victory over Dagenham & Redbridge for the League Cup clash against Bury, with Paul Heffernan, Daniel Jones, Darren Potter, Liam Palmer, Neil Mellor and Jon Otsemobor all starting for Wednesday.

But it was the visitors who started brightly and they had the ball in the net after just 90 seconds. Andy Bishop pounced after Nicky Weaver parried Ryan Lowe's fizzing effort from distance, only for the offside flag to deny the ex-York City man.

It was a lively start from the Shakers, who were looking to win a League Cup game for the first time since the 2006-07 season, when they humbled Championship opposition in the shape of Sunderland.

The game settled into a somewhat pedestrian affair, with both sides maintaining possession well, but with little penetration in the final third.

But it was Bury who looked the more likely to open the scoring. Bishop was again involved, latching onto Lowe's pinpoint through ball only for Weaver to race off his line and save well at the feet of the striker.

Steven Schumacher and Andy Howarth tried their luck from the edge of the area but both failed to test Weaver, as a well-drilled Shakers side began to look comfortable.

Wednesday's first attempt of note came from Neil Mellor, who controlled Gray Teale's pass on the edge of the area before unleashing a half volley which fizzed narrowly over the crossbar.

Alan Knill's men finished the half the stronger, as Bishop persisted to be a thorn in Wednesday's side. The 27-year-old wriggled away from a couple of defenders, before bending a right-foot effort over just before the break whilst Howarth fired narrowly wide.

Boss Irvine introduced Coke and Clinton Morrison at the interval as the Owls looked to start the second 45 better than they had the first.

But Bishop continued to be at the forefront of Bury's incisive attacking play, missing the post by a lick of paint, despite an offside flag.

However, the Owls were not to be denied and sprung into life on the hour. Substitute Coke picked the ball up out on the left flank, before leaving a couple of defenders in his wake and firing low into the net from a tight angle.

But the visitors continued to press forward. In the space of five hectic minutes, Mark Beevers almost put through his own goal from a Howarth cross, only for Weaver to spare his blushes. Peter Sweeney then came close from distance and Bishop rattled the bar as the travelling Bury fans' frustration was clear to see.

Wednesday rallied, and after some clever hold-up play from Mellor, won a free-kick right on the edge of the area. Up stepped Tommy Spurr, who superbly bent his effort up and over the wall only to see the ball strike come back into play after hitting the underside of the woodwork.

Tom Lees and Schumacher both tested Weaver from distance, but there was to be no late equalizer for Bury as Wednesday sealed a place in the hat for the second round draw.
