Ref ruined UEFA Cup night

Posted on: Mon 16 Jun 2008

In the third part of our exclusive interview with David Hirst, the Owls legend talks candidly on a number of issues, including Wednesday's memorable UEFA Cup double header with German giants Kaiserslautern in the early 1990s.

He also reflects on twin heartbreak under the twin towers as the Owls were beaten by Arsenal in both domestic cup finals of 1993, and finally his brief sojourn on to the international stage with England.

On Kaiserslautern (away)
We were doing ever so well until the referee sent me off really! We were winning the game through my header and I guess I was guilty of a little petulance but not much more and the ref went the way of the fans. It was a very upsetting day for me but I think we all underestimated just what a massive part the referee and linesmen play in European football. What we perceive as a great tackle over here is a free kick over there.

On Arsenal defeats
We were a really good side and thought we were surely good enough to come home with one of the trophies. We knocked some good clubs out on the way to Wembley for both finals; we took Arsenal to the wire, but it just wasn't to be. I scored in the FA Cup final - and that's one to tick off the list - but we lost the game. Unfortunately, they had a player of the calibre of Ian Wright, as many clubs of that era discovered.

On England
It was a great honour to play for my country. I made my debut playing alongside Gary Lineker when England toured Australasia. I scored my only goal against New Zealand. I was then selected for the World Cup qualifier against France but was out of the team at half time and my international career started to slide from there. I was selected for a number of other squads but had to pull out with injuries suffered playing for Wednesday.
