Sheffield Wednesday manager Brian Laws is set to secure his second signing of the summer with the loan capture of Chelsea midfielder Jimmy Smith.

The 21-year-old, an attacking midfielder who can play right across the engine room, is due in Sheffield on Thursday of this week, when he will sign a temporary SWFC deal that runs until January 10 2009.

Laws believes Smith can have a major influence on his side's 2008/09 campaign.

Laws said: "I'm really pleased to be getting the services of Jimmy Smith on board. He's a high-energy player with an abundance of natural talent and I'm extremely confident he can make a difference to our midfield.

"Obviously, Jimmy has had an excellent grounding at Chelsea and he also has the benefit of already having played Championship football with QPR and Norwich."

Smith has been on the Stamford Bridge books since the age of nine, turning professional in March 2005.

He top-scored for Chelsea reserves two seasons ago and ended that season by making his first team debut in the Premiership at Newcastle.

Smith has two Championship loan spells under the belt, firstly with Queens Park Rangers during the 2006/07 campaign and more recently at Norwich City last time out. The former England under-19 international made 31 appearances for the R's and nine for the Canaries.
