Brian Laws has outlined his reasoning for going down the dual captaincy road ahead of the 2008/09 Championship campaign.

The Owls chief exclusively revealed to Wednesday World that Steve Watson will take the role of club captain while Richard Wood assumes the armband responsibilities on the pitch.

Laws said: "It's a dual role, I'm looking at two aspects of the captaincy. Richard Wood will be team captain out on the pitch, he has the authority, and he's a player who is so enthusiastic.

"He drives people on and I think the captaincy will be a great thing for him to take on."

Given the ever-increasing profile of football in the modern day, Laws has also opted for a club captain in the shape of veteran Watson, whose duties will centre more on off-field matters.

The gaffer continued: "We want a club captain as well and on the senior side I have given that to Steve Watson.

"Steve will be in control of the PR side off the field. There's a lot of involvement regarding captaincies in the modern day and I'm delighted that both players have said yes.

"The players have been unanimous at the way Richard and Steve have approached it and they appreciate the fact that these two really do want to take control."
