Sheffield Wednesday's under-18s match at Stoke City this weekend has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

The Owls team will stay at home after heavy rain enveloped England on Friday.

The U18s kicked off their league campaign last month with tough fixtures against Premiership opposition Fulham and Portsmouth.

The first fixture, away to Fulham, ended 1-1 with a goal from defender Sam Liversidge earning the Owls a point.

Portsmouth then left Middlewood Road with a 4-1 win but despite that setback, academy manager Sean McAuley was encouraged by what he saw against quality opposition.

He told Wednesday World: "We went to Fulham and competed really well against a really good side and they had a couple of special individual players. We drew the game but in reflection we could have won it."

On the defeat at the hands of Pompey, he added: "They were a good strong physical team, we made a few individual errors and that gave them confidence.

"Most of the lads we played were a year older than us but we were well equipped and we have taken those individual errors on board and are ready for Stoke."

The opening two fixtures were in addition to the academy's usual quota against teams from the north, north west and the Midlands to make up the shortfall of games from each of the four regional divisions.
