Lee Grant has capped an excellent start to the new campaign by winning the Handley Brown Player of the Month award for September.

The Owls goalkeeper turned in a string of outstanding displays - not least on the last day of September against Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough - and has been rewarded by topping the club's official online poll.

A delighted Grant told swfc.co.uk: "That's really pleasing news and a real bonus so early in the season after I won one late last season.

"That's on a personal note but I take this as an award for the team. We've defended well from back to front after the blip at Reading, we've worked so hard as a team and got our rewards."

Grant saw off the challenge of striker Marcus Tudgay by the narrow margin of just four per cent - the closest vote for some time.

He added: "I think it's really healthy that the voting was so close. Tuggy did brilliantly last month, so for me to finish first is a real coup. I'd like to sincerely thank everyone who voted for me."

The top three in the September Player of the Month vote are as follows:

1. Lee Grant (39.04 per cent)

2. Marcus Tudgay (34.51 per cent)

3. Tommy Spurr (7.82 per cent)

Thank you to the 1701 supporters who took the time to register their vote.
