Wednesday have appealed Jimmy Smith's sending-off at league leaders Birmingham on Saturday.

The on-loan midfielder was shown a straight red card by referee Paul Taylor following an aerial challenge with Blues defender Stuart Parnaby.

But Owls boss Brian Laws believes the decision was harsh and has lodged an appeal to the FA as a result.

Laws said: "When I saw it first hand, I wasn't sure. I've now watched it three times from different angles. I think it looked a bit harsh; he hasn't connected with the player above his chest; there was no malice in it; he's mistimed his jump."

Wednesday will discover on Tuesday afternoon if the appeal has proved successful.
