The Owls youngster came on for the second half of the game against Scotland and impressed in his native right back berth as the Irish emerged 3-1 winners.
McMenamin, who can also play in a less favoured central defensive role, gave a good account of himself at Hamilton, prompting McAuley to say: "I thought Liam was excellent, he did well in everything that he did.
"And that's credit to the club because it shows what we have coming through.
"I've felt for him in recent weeks because he's had to play out of position to allow Frank Simek to come back but he's done really well."
McAuley was particularly pleased with the way in which McMenamin adapted to the increased demands of international football, adding: "For Liam to step into an under-21 game, especially one that could be classed as a game with a bit of rivalry, and perform so well is credit to him.
"He coped tremendously well, he was constantly on the ball and was always looking for the ball, which is an essential part of any professional's game."
