Owls team captain Richard Wood was disappointed to crash out of the FA Cup to Fulham on Saturday but was impressed with his side's overall performance.
Andy Johnson opened the scoring on 11 minutes for the visitors, before Tommy Spurr equalised with a spectacular strike from distance ten minutes later. But with just two minutes left on the clock, Johnson scored again from close range, sending Fulham into the fourth round.
"I thought we gave it a good go but at the end of the day their quality showed," Wood said.
"It was a really good learning experience. I was at fault for the first goal, he (Andy Johnson) span off me and the second goal was great passing and moving and a great ball in.
"We gave it a good go and I thought we defended well at times but they had two chances and scored two very good goals."
Despite losing out to Johnson's late strike, Wood has taken plenty from the game and hopes that the Owls can build on Saturday's performance next week, when attention is turned back to the league at Ipswich.
He said: "We created a lot of chances and we maybe could have got a draw but we are happy with our performance and the lads did very well.
"I think we had tired legs and tired minds and with their Premiership quality they came good. But this was a welcome break from the league and I hope we can take our performance into the league and go from there."
On a final note, Wood was delighted with how the younger players in the squad performed against Fulham, highlighting 20-year-old midfielder Luke Boden as the standout man in the middle.
"I thought Luke Boden did very well on the left wing and we need these players because we haven't got a very big squad and we've been struggling."
He added: "The lads that came off the bench did very well which is pleasing for the club and reflects really well on our youth system."
