Remembering the 96

Posted on: Tue 14 Apr 2009

Sheffield Wednesday Football Club will observe a two-minute silence at 3.06pm on Wednesday, April 15, in honour of the 96 men, women and children who lost their lives in the Hillsborough Disaster 20 years ago.

This was the time at which the FA Cup semi final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest was abandoned on the same date in 1989 because of the crush which took place at the Leppings Lane end of Hillsborough, resulting in 96 fatalities amongst Liverpool supporters.

Liverpool Football Club and the Hillsborough Family Support Group have asked Sheffield Wednesday not to hold a formal memorial service at Hillsborough on the 20th anniversary because an official event is taking place at Anfield on April 15. Sheffield Wednesday respects this request and therefore no formal event will take place at Hillsborough on the day but club staff will observe a two-minute silence to correspond with the event at Anfield.

Sheffield Wednesday chairman, Lee Strafford, said: "The thoughts of everyone associated with Sheffield Wednesday are with the families of the 96 Liverpool fans who lost their lives on April 15, 1989, and what happened that terrible day is something that should never be forgotten.

"The Hillsborough Disaster will always be remembered for the tragic loss of so many lives and it had a profound impact on countless people and families, not only in Liverpool, Sheffield and Nottingham, but across the country and overseas as well. Our sympathies remain with the loved ones of those who lost their lives 20 years ago."

Sheffield Wednesday will provide access to the Hillsborough memorial on Parkside Road as well as the Leppings Lane end at Hillsborough for those wishing to pay their respects at the stadium on the 20th anniversary.

The crowd will also be asked to observe a minute's silence prior to Sheffield Wednesday's match against Southampton on Saturday, April 18.
