Owls star Mark Beevers was on hand last week to draw the raffle at Sheffield's St Wilfrid's Centre.
St Wilfrid's is an old Parish Church which has been renovated to provide help for the vulnerable and socially excluded in Sheffield. Most of the centre's members are homeless, disabled or suffering from mental health problems.
Alongside a large community hall there are dedicated training and interview rooms, kitchens, a café, showers, laundry rooms and large skills workshops fitted out for woodcrafts and pottery. There are over 100 regular volunteers, some of whom have offered 15 years of dedicated service.
Mark was welcomed to the centre with a rapturous round of applause from the attendees gathered in the main hall. Staff and members had decorated the hall in replica Wednesday shirts, scarves and pictures and even sang him the full version of 'Hi Ho Silver Lining'!
After Beevers had drawn the raffle, he answered questions, posed for photos and signed autographs. He said: "The people at the centre were really accommodating. They sang Wednesday songs to me, chanted my name and were really welcoming. I was even given an apple when I declined a piece of cake! I said that Brian Laws wouldn't be too happy if I was eating cake, so the chef gave me an apple!"
"I really enjoyed myself, I'm just glad I brought a smile to their faces. They certainly brought one to mine!"
