Richard Hinds is aiming to carry on where he left off last season and show the kind of form that earned him his place back in the team after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The centre back, who signed a new two-year contract this summer, is now keen to get the season back underway and compete for his starting shirt given the added competition in the ranks.
Speaking to Wednesday World, he said: "We have had a nice break but it's pleasing to be back and I'm looking forward to the start of the season now.
"I had a bad start last year, breaking my leg, and was told I would be out for eight months. But I was only out for four, which I was delighted with, and hopefully I can play more games this year.
"There will be good competition for places so it will be tough to play and everyone will have to be on top form to get a game."
The lifelong Wednesday fan has big ambitions for the new campaign and has his sights set on a top-six finish.
He continued: "There is a great team spirit, we have come back and it's like we haven't been away. We have all clicked together and that will put us in good stead for the rest of the season.
"We need to be on top form to get where we should be and that's the play-offs. That was where we should have been last year if we had a little more consistency. But we have proved we can compete with the best teams.
"The lads are all enthusiastic and can't wait to get going. The first game is against Barnsley we are building for that, and it would be great to start with three points."
