Under 18s reach Holland final

Posted on: Tue 11 Aug 2009

The Sheffield Wednesday under-18s emerged from last weekend's Copa del Agatha tournament in Holland with their heads held high, losing in the final to a last-gasp Standard Liege strike.

The Owls went down 2-1 to after matching the Belgian side throughout the game, falling only at the last to a spectacular goal that settled a hard-fought contest.

The final on Sunday was the culmination of a hugely productive weekend for the Wednesday youngsters, who conducted themselves 'impeccably' according to academy manager, Sean McAuley.

"The boys were judged on their off-field performance as well as on it," said McAuley. "And I'm delighted to say they promoted themselves and the club impeccably.

"It was a fantastic experience for the players, they faced some very strong opponents and gave a very good account of themselves.

"I have to say, the tournament was very well organised and gave us ideal preparation. From my point of view, the boys passed the test with flying colours."

The Copa del Agatha featured Wednesday, Sparta Rotterdam (Holland), NEC Nijmegan (Holland), Botafogo (Brazil), Standard Liege (Belgium) and Arminia Bielefeld (Germany) contesting 50-minute games.

The Owls were pitched in Group B and beat Sparta 2-1 before going down 1-0 to Arminia. That was enough to take Wednesday to the next stage, where they overcame Botafogo 4-3 on penalties to reach the final.
