Sodje on the comeback trail

Posted on: Tue 25 Aug 2009

Akpo Sodje is back on the comeback trail and out to make an impression against former club Port Vale on Tuesday night.

The Owls head to Vale Park in the second round of the Carling Cup with a good chance on paper of progression to the next stage - at which point Premiership clubs enter the competition.

And returning striker Sodje is keen to bite the hand that once fed before hopefully hooking a big fish at Hillsborough.

He told Wednesday Player: "Hopefully I can get some playing time under the belt and get a goal to kickstart my season.

"The League Cup is an important competition because everyone loves a cup run and there is a possibility of playing one of the big teams, hopefully at Hillsborough.

"I played for Port Vale against Tottenham at White Hart Lane in the League Cup. It was a great occasion, even though we lost the game 3-1."

Having missed the early throes of the season with a groin strain, Sodje is now fit and raring to go. But if he does find the target against Vale, the striker insists he will show due respect to the home fans.

He added: "I haven't played at Port Vale since I moved to Sheffield Wednesday. I would like to get a goal but if I do, I will show my respect to the Port Vale fans, who were always right behind me from the first day I got there to the day that I left.

"I still get messages and cards from people there so I don't think I'll celebrate too much if I score."
