Purse keen and ready to go

Posted on: Thu 10 Sep 2009

Owls skipper, Darren Purse, feels well rested after the international break but is now keen to get back into action with three big games on the horizon.

Wednesday have two testing fixtures at Hillsborough coming up on Saturday and the following Tuesday against Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest respectively before travelling across the city to face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Friday week.

Purse told Wednesday Player: "It's been nice not having any pressure building up to games and it's been a nice relaxing week but we're looking forward to this week now.

"We've had two very good wins going into a very important week with three games very close to each other. There's plenty of confidence around the squad and that's what we want with this important week coming up."

The captain has been happy with Wednesday's defensive record in the weeks leading into the international break and believes there is a good understanding between the back four.

He went on: "A couple of the goals we conceded early in the season were largely due to the fact we hadn't played much together. But we are gelling as a back four and it has shown in the past couple of games.

"We've only had two league games at Hillsborough since I've come to the club and if we can recreate the form we had here against Scunthorpe over the next two games, it could be two big wins for us leading into what is an even bigger game for the fans against Sheffield United.

"But it will be a massive game against Forest and as we have proved when we played Scunthorpe, we can produce good football. If we can get something similar to the Barnsley atmosphere as well, it would be great for the lads and hopefully we can come away with three points."
