Esajas taking nothing for granted

Posted on: Thu 24 Sep 2009

Etienne Esajas is not taking a starting shirt for granted ahead of Saturday's game against Cardiff City - despite turning the Steel City derby on its head last time out for the Owls.

The Dutchman turned in an inspired performance from the bench at Bramall Lane, making one goal, scoring another and proving a real thorn in United's side.

Wednesday fell just short of an amazing second half comeback, losing 3-2 across the city, but one positive was Esajas' display.

The winger is now favourite to start the Bluebirds clash but he told Wednesday Player that situation is far from certain.

"You never can be sure," Esajas said. "I did well against Sheffield United but it wasn't just me, the team played a real good game in the second half.

"I am fighting for my place in the team and I am never sure of that place."

The 24-year-old also voiced his frustration over having spent the lion's share of the season so far as a substitute.

And with his contract up at the end of the current campaign, Esajas is desperate for the chance to showcase his skills on a regular basis.

He added: "I was real hungry to get on the pitch against United because I had been on the bench for the last five games.

"You can see things that go wrong from the bench and think you can help if you can get on the pitch. But there is nothing you can do to help if you stay on the bench.

"I hope last week was a turning point for me. I have started the season fit after missing a lot of time last year so now I want to get out there on the pitch and show Wednesday what I can do."
