Laws looking to seize the opportunity

Posted on: Tue 13 Oct 2009

Brian Laws is looking to get back to winning ways at Hillsborough on Saturday after the disappointment at Derby County last time out.

A two-week international break has dragged for the Owls players who are eager to get back to winning ways against Coventry City on Saturday, which is closely followed by an encounter with Preston North End at Hillsborough three days later.

"It's been a long two weeks and it's been very frustrating because in football terms it's a long time to get back playing again," Laws said.

"However, we know what we have to do now and it's important that we bounce back. We were very disappointed with our performance at Derby but we have to get back on track and keep the basics right and we have two fantastic opportunities with two home games on the bounce.

"If we can maximise the points there, we are right back on track so it's a golden opportunity for us in this next fortnight."

Laws acknowledges that the Championship is a very competitive and open division once again this year and while defeat at Pride Park left the Owls in 16th place, they remain just four points off the top six after 11 league games.

And the Wednesday chief is expecting another entertaining match in S6 on Saturday, with Chris Coleman's side expected to come to South Yorkshire with a desire to attack, boasting two of the most dangerous finishers in the division.

"Coventry are a good side like ourselves," Laws said. "They can score goals and have probably got the most prolific strike partnership in the division with Leon Best and Clinton Morrison in fine form. We have to be at our best to win this game and if we defend well then I know we'll do well because we can create plenty of chances at the other end."

Following the home double-header, Wednesday head to Watford next Friday so it will be a tall order once again in terms of a physical test. However, Laws has no fear of the quick succession of matches and sees the coming week as a big opportunity for his team.

"We have got another three games in six days so it will be test of our character, our fitness and above all else our ability. There's nine points available in quick succession but we'll concentrate on our first game against Coventry, we're a good side at home - teams are coming to Hillsborough and changing their tactics because they know if they let us play, we'll hurt them. We have to adapt to that and show a little more patience but I've been pleased with a lot of our play, particularly at home.

"I think it should be a really good contest and certainly over the next six days I think they are three super games to play in."
