Russ insists on positive approach

Posted on: Tue 27 Oct 2009

Assistant manager, Russ Wilcox, has insisted Wednesday will head down to Bristol positively on Saturday, looking to hit back after last Friday's defeat at Watford.

Although accepting the Owls will be the underdogs with the Robins still unbeaten at home, Wilcox has confidence in his side that they can get a result from the game.

He told Wednesday Player: "It's a massively tough game. You look at their home record of five wins and two draws, so even if you're going there in good form it will still be a tough game but it's a challenge we are looking forward to.

"We'll be approaching the game positively as we always do, tweaking a few things but we need to be better defensively and we need a base to work from and that's the key.

"We did that at home last season and only conceded 14 goals- if we can get that base then we can build from there."

Wilcox highlighted where he expects City to be strong this weekend and that is in the forward areas, particularly with Nicky Maynard up front.

He went on: "I think Maynard is a key player and in my opinion, he could go on and play Premiership football. I watched him Saturday against Barnsley and he'll be dangerous but they are very quick up top and we must be on our guard."

Moving forward, Wilcox is calling for that key ingredient which every side in the Championship needs to succeed - consistency.

The assistant boss has seen the good and the bad from his side this season but is now hoping to see less of the latter.

He reasoned: "We have to address things on training ground and get back to basics and that's the key. Basic defending. If the ball is there clear your lines, if you are marking somebody, mark them until the phase is finished.

"We need to get a consistent run going. At times we've looked world beaters and outstanding but then other times we're not so good so we need to be somewhere in between.

"Nobody is expecting us to get anything from down there so we'll be looking to make a big surprise."
