Brunt's respect for Owls

Posted on: Mon 30 Nov 2009

Former Wednesday midfielder, Chris Brunt, was delighted with the reception he received from all four stands at Hillsborough on Saturday.

Brunt, who made 152 appearance for the Owls, scored his sixth goal of the season on Saturday but opted not to celebrate out of respect for his former club.

He told Wednesday Player: "You see a lot of players going back to play against their old clubs now. Not celebrating my goal was out of respect for Sheffield Wednesday. I enjoyed my time here and I was delighted with the reception I received from all four sides.

"I appreciate that Sheffield Wednesday gave me my foothold in football and I loved my time here so I have a lot of things to be grateful to them for."

The Baggies top scorer hailed his side's display at Hillsborough as their best away performance of the season.

He went on: "Wednesday had the early spell in the first ten minutes but once we got a foothold in the game and got a goal in front it was pretty much one way traffic.

"To be fair, it was probably our best performance away from home, we are really good on the counter attack and I think we showed that.

"You would like to think the game is over at 3-0, but we saw Wednesday against United at Bramall Lane when they could have nicked something.

"That's what we were saying at half time, 'don't let it happen to us,' so it was important we didn't concede early in the second half because we know that the crowd would have got right behind Wednesday and it would have been difficult for us."
