After the Boxing Day thriller with Newcastle United, Wednesday striker Luke Varney admitted that his side was more than happy with not just the point, but the team performance as a whole.

"Any game against Newcastle is always a tough one," explained Varney. "We performed well all the way through the team, from Tudgay up front to Grant at the back. The team was fantastic and we all worked really hard. We only picked up a point but it's a step in the right direction."

"When we were at 2-2 we didn't want to be too gung-ho, even though we looked like we could go on and win the game. The manager said at half time that if we could get a goal back and get a point against the team at the top of the league, it would be a good result and anything else would be a bonus."

Varney, who scored the Owls' first goal in six games and also had a hand in the second, admitted that the result was more important than getting his name on the scoresheet.

"It was a nice game to score in," he said. "We've all been waiting for some time. I'm happy to get a goal, but the result is more important."

Varney is currently on loan from Derby County until the New Year, but after picking up his fifth booking of the season in the first half for pulling back Jonas Gutierrez, suspension rules him out of the Bank Holiday trip to Blackpool, meaning he could well have played his last game for the Owls:

"Yes, I'm suspended for the Blackpool game. It's obviously disappointing for me because after a performance like that I was looking forward to the next game."

Asked whether he would like his loan to be extended at Hillsborough, Varney added: "I don't know what's going to happen. I'm contracted to Derby at the moment so we'll just have to see what happens when I get back there.

"I'd love to stay, the lads have been fantastic and the fans have been great. It's a great club and I'd love for my loan to be extended."
