New manager Irvine was appointed to the Hillsborough helm last Friday and his regime kicks off in earnest this weekend with a local derby clash against Barnsley at Oakwell. And skipper Purse says that every member of the squad is in the frame for inclusion.

He told Wednesday Player: "I think the gaffer has settled in really well with the lads. He's told everyone that we all have fresh starts and a clean slate, which is a good thing. The first few sessions have gone really well, the tackles have been flying in and everyone is out to impress.

"The tempo has been excellent and the lads have taken to the new coaches really well. It's not long before the first game comes so it's about adjusting to each other as fast we can."

With Wednesday standing at exactly the halfway stage of a bleak season so far, Purse insists the arrival of Irvine and his coaching staff, Rob Kelly and Billy Bar, can only trigger a positive effect in the S6 camp.

He added: "Everybody is disappointed with the way the season has gone so far but we can make a positive out of that by moving forward from here.

"We have 23 games to go and we need to be on around 52 or 53 points come the end of the season, that should be enough to stay in the division. It's going to be a hard task but we're all up for it and raring to go. Hopefully, with the new manager and new ideas, that will all come to fruition."
