Sheffield Wednesday's second string went down to a narrow 1-0 defeat against West Bromwich Albion at the Look Local Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

The Baggies notched the only goal of the game three minutes into the second half through Chris Wood and despite a late rally from Owls, an equaliser evaded Sean McAuley's side.

Wednesday started the game well and had half-chances to get their noses in front before the Baggies went on to take a grip of the game. The Owls also suffered the loss of Francis Jeffers early in the contest.

Coach McAuley said: "It was disappointing to lose Franny so early in the game and he will be assessed first thing in the morning.

"We started brightly overall but West Brom slowly got a grip on the game and you could say we were fortunate to go in at half time level.

"So it was disappointing to concede just a few minutes into the second half and we should have had an equaliser. But credit to their defence, they stood up well and were well organised."

On the plus side, the Owls gave starts to senior players Richard Hinds, Etienne Esajas, Sean McAllister and Luke Boden, each of whom emerged unscathed from the Stocksbridge clash.

McAuley added: "Those lads have been on the fringes of the first team so it's important that they get some game time under the belt.

"West Brom have a talented side and I was pleased that the lads came through that test OK in terms of fitness."
