O'Connor focused on Foxes

Posted on: Fri 05 Mar 2010

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder James O'Connor has put recent results to one side and is focussed on three points from the big clash with Leicester City on Saturday.

The Irishman, who has captained the Owls in Darren Purse's absence, is keen to bounce back from a three-match losing streak and post a valuable win against the Foxes.

He said: "There's no point in sitting and crying about what's gone. It's how you react and we've certainly got to work harder.

"My attitude is when things don't go well, try harder, you work harder to put things right."

Wednesday's slip in form has seen them fall into the relegation zone, triggered by the dismal defeat at Reading last time out.

"Last week was hugely disappointing," said O'Connor. "We've lost three games on the spin so it's time to show a bit of character really.

"We're back in the bottom three, exactly where we don't want to be."

Meanwhile, at the other end of the table, ex-Owl Nigel Pearson's side are unbeaten in eight games and sure to prove a tough nut to crack.

Leicester beat SWFC 3-0 at the Walkers Stadium back in December but O'Connor insists Wednesday can exact revenge and emerge with a vital win on Saturday.

"They're in the play-offs, they've had a good run and Nigel Pearson, who I know well, has done a really good job there," he said.

"But the law of averages says they're due a defeat so hopefully it will be against us.

"I'm more concerned about how we approach the game and what we do, and hopefully we can go and stamp our authority on the game and get three points."

The match commences a crucial period for Wednesday, with title-contenders West Brom and fourth-placed Swansea City making up a testing three games in a week.

"They're huge games," O'Connor added. "But again these are all games you should be looking forward to playing - big atmospheres and an awful lot at stake.

"At this stage, we just need to do what it takes to win so let's hope that playing against some of the leading teams we can do better."
