Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Lee Grant and striker Marcus Tudgay were at Morrisons Hillsborough store yesterday to sign up to the England 2018 FIFA World Cup bid, and to encourage the people of Sheffield to show their support for the bid by adding their signatures too.
Morrisons has launched a campaign to collect more than two million signatures in its stores across England, giving supporters the opportunity to back the bid. This will help demonstrate the strength of public enthusiasm for England to host the tournament, and to FIFA who will decide its destination in December 2010.
Anyone in Sheffield wishing to sign up to the bid can visit Morrisons stores in Hillsborough, Ecclesfield, Halfway and Meadowhead to show their support, between now and September 2010.
Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper, Lee Grant, said: "Marcus Tudgay and I have both signed to support the England 2018 World Cup bid and we would urge all football supporters and people from the community to get behind it. With Hillsborough selected as a potential host venue for 2018, it would be a massive thing for Sheffield to host the World Cup and there would be a tremendous buzz around the city."
Mark Gunter, Group Retail Director at Morrisons, said: "We're sure that our customers would be delighted if the World Cup came to England in 2018. With our sporting store colleagues in Sheffield we are determined to demonstrate popular support for England's bid by delivering more than two million signatures, showing FIFA the country's passion and enthusiasm for hosting the world's biggest football spectacle."
