Win target stays the same

Posted on: Wed 24 Mar 2010

Alan Irvine is sticking to his new requirement of four more wins for safety as the Owls prepare for a crunch clash against fellow strugglers Watford at Hillsborough on Wednesday.

Three draws on the spin have seen the manager revise his earlier target of five more victories. And the stakes could hardly be higher tomorrow given that Wednesday will leapfrog Watford in the table in the event of an S6 success.

Irvine said: "It's what I am comfortable with so I'm not going to change that at this stage. If we don't need that many wins, then great, but I will still try and concentrate on us getting that many.

"We could quite easily have won that game at the weekend against Derby but we didn't and that's obviously disappointing but it was an improved performance from say Doncaster and Ipswich.

"And we are going to need some good home performances between now and the end of the season."

Despite the visitors' indifferent form of late - the Hornets have lost five of their last six games - Malky Mackay's side will still provide a stern test of Wednesday's credentials.

Irvine is more than aware of Watford's ability and insists their faltering league position does not do the team justice.

He said: "Watford are actually a very good football team. They have completely changed from the old Watford - which was a very successful Watford - when they got promotion under Adie Boothroyd. But then things went wrong when they came back down.

"They played in a particular way and the current team plays completely differently. They play in a very attractive way, a very controlled way and have real threats up front. They've got goals from midfield as well.

"I've seen quite a bit of Watford recently because it just so happens they have played a lot of the same teams that we have been playing in recent weeks. They are playing a lot better than their recent results have suggested.

"Even at the game they lost 3-1 at Cardiff on Sunday, they played very well and were the better team in the first half. Once again, it's proof of the very small margins in this division and how important it is to get a goal when you are playing well."
