Varney hails crucial strike

Posted on: Thu 25 Mar 2010

Owls striker Luke Varney has hailed his last minute winner against Watford as the most important goal he has scored for Wednesday.

With time running out, the on-loan hitman pounced on Marcus Tudgay's cross field pass to blast past Scott Loach in the Watford goal and seal a crucial victory for the Owls.

After the game he told swfc.co.uk: "I don't think we've scored many late goals this season and we've probably deserved a bit of luck.

"We needed the points, it was a massive push in the second half and I was lucky that I gambled when I did. That is definitely the most important goal I have scored for Wednesday so hopefully now we can push forward and take the confidence into Saturday."

Varney admitted the first half performance wasn't up to scratch but was delighted with the second half reaction and desire to take the game to the visitors.

Owls v Watford

On loan Preston defender Eddie Nolan put Wednesday ahead with an excellent piece of individual skill. Watford equalised through Tom Cleverley's free kick but Varney is more pleased with the three points that could prove vital in the relegation battle.

He went on: "It was a very important that we won and I'm delighted with the three points. We were all disappointed first half because it was a poor showing from us.

"We were really pleased with our reaction in the second half and you could tell by our energy and work ethic and the commitment to get three points pushed us on to victory.
"It was a big goal and I'm not one to hide my emotions when I score - I was just delighted that I put the ball in the net."
