Owls striker Neil Mellor was disappointed to finish on the losing side on Saturday but insists Wednesday will be ready for the new season on 7 August.
The Owls went down 1-0 against Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park but Mellor believes the important thing at this stage is fitness levels and, on that front, things are coming together.
He told Wednesday Player after the match: "I feel personally and as a team we're getting there.
"It's disappointing to get beat in any game, not just pre-season, but it's about getting fit for the new season and being right come 7 August when it kicks-off.
"These pre-season games are about making sure each player gets their fitness. Until we get nearer to the first game of the season we won't know which team the manager will line-up with."
The loan striker is out to stake his claim for a place in the side in the season-opener against Dagenham & Redbridge but faces stiff competition in that department.
He went on: "As a forward you want to score goals and obviously the more goals you get the more likely you are to be in the team.
"We've not got as many as we would like but come the start of the season we'll be raring to go and those goals will come.
"I know League One is like the Championship in that you have to work hard to win football matches. We'll be doing that this season and the gaffer will be tuning us in for every game so we will be ready for it."
