Wednesday captain Darren Purse insists the squad must be on the ball for all 46 games this season starting this Saturday against Dagenham & Redbridge.
Purse is hoping for a good start to the season which will create a feel-good factor around the club and give the squad an early boost of confidence heading into the new league campaign.
He told swfc.co.uk: "We know results haven't been fantastic in pre-season but the performances have been improving and it's now when the results start to matter.
"If we get off to a good start, get the confidence and the feelgood factor around the place, then I think we'll go close this season."
The Daggers are first up at Hillsborough and, fresh from their promotion via the play-offs in League Two, Purse expects them to come to S6 looking for three-points.
He went on: "It's going to be a tough game. They've just been promoted and will come here looking to win so we need to go out there and stamp our authority on the game early doors.
"It will be a difficult game, it will be a difficult season and we'll need to be on the ball for all 46 games and if we're not, we'll make it hard for ourselves."
