Owls secure Weaver deal

Posted on: Thu 05 Aug 2010

Sheffield Wednesday have secured the services of Nicky Weaver on a one-year contract.

The 31-year-old goalkeeper joins on a free transfer and is eligible for the Owls' opening game of the 2010/11 season against Dagenham & Redbridge at Hillsborough on Saturday.

The move follows the Football League lifting the recent transfer embargo imposed on Wednesday. Following constructive dialogue, the club can also confirm that it has reached agreement with HMRC over a payment schedule moving forward .

Weaver enters into his second spell with Wednesday having enjoyed a successful loan stint at the club back in the 2005/06 campaign.

The Sheffielder and lifelong Wednesdayite has made a total of 307 senior starts in a career spanning 16 years. He holds the club record at former club Manchester City for the most clean sheets recorded in a season - 26 - achieved in 1998/99.

Owls manager Alan Irvine said: "I am really pleased to bring Nicky Weaver to the club. We were keen to bring an experienced goalkeeper in ahead of the new season and Nicky fits that bill.

"The two young goalkeepers we have, Richard O'Donnell and Arron Jameson, did very well in pre-season but I felt we needed that experience for the back four that the two youngsters can only benefit from."
