The season opener against Dagenham & Redbridge at Hillsborough this weekend signals the start of a new chapter in striker Neil Mellor's career.
Alan Irvine, who managed Mellor during his spell in charge at Preston, signed ex-Liverpool striker on a season-long loan from the Lilywhites and Mellor admits he is raring to go.
"I'm really excited," he told Wednesday Player. "All the hard work of pre-season is finished and now it's the exciting stuff."
John Still's Dagenham side will still be on a high following their 3-2 play-off final victory over Rotherham United last term, with Mellor conceding it will be a tricky opener.
He continued: "I don't know a lot about Dagenham, but with the way they came up last season they're probably still going to be buoyant. They might expect us to have a hangover, but we're well up for it."
And with Irvine at the helm, Mellor is confident the manager will get the best out of the strong squad he has assembled and steer Wednesday to success this season.
Mellor concluded: "He got the best out of everyone when I worked with him at Preston. I've always got over 10 goals a season and I want to get to the next level. I've got the ability, it's just proving it on the pitch now."
