The 31-year-old goalkeeper had a brief but successful loan spell at Hillsborough during the 2005-06 season and has now returned for a second stint in S6.

"These are familiar surroundings for me," he told Wednesday Player. "I was here five years ago on loan under Paul Sturrock and way before that I used to come as a kid and watch on the terraces, so I'm delighted to be at the club I have always supported."

Weaver can now focus on beginning another chapter in a career that has so far spanned over 16 years.

He spent a decade at Manchester city between 1997 and 2007 and holds the club record for the most clean sheets in a season - 26 posted in the 1998-99 campaign.

"We all know it's going to be tough this season," added Weaver. "If we all work hard and pull together we can achieve our goal of getting out of this league at the first time of asking.

"A lot of teams are going to come to Hillsborough and play for a draw. We've got to make it a tough place to come."
