Reserves slip to Vale defeat

Posted on: Wed 08 Sep 2010

Sheffield Wednesday reserves went down to Port Vale 1-0 at Vale Park.

The home side scored the only goal of the game ten minutes from time when Joe Davis rose high to head past Arron Jameson from Abdulai Bell-Baggie's cross.

Both sides had their chances in the first half of the totesport.com league match but failed to put them away as the score stayed 0-0 at the break.

Wednesday retained possession better in the second half but it was vale who should have taken the lead from the penalty spot on 56 minutes.

Sam Morsy stepped up to take the spot kick but Jameson saved well, diving to his right to push the ball wide to keep the score level.

Vadaine Oliver went close for the Owls five minutes later almost finishing an excellent passing move that was started on the half way line, but his low drive was pushed wide by Vale keeper Chris Martin.

The breakthrough did come however in the 79th minute when Bell-Baggie's cross found Davis in space in the box who powered his free header past Jameson to win the game for Port Vale.

Sean McAuley said: "We started the first ten minutes well but after that we didn't keep possession as well as we should.

"We improved on that in the second half and kept the ball better but didn't take our chances which was disappointing because we fielded a side that I thought should have won the game.

"I was impressed with Liam Palmer and Arron Jameson who came through the match really well. Jameson made a good save from the penalty and also made a fantastic one-on-one save."
