Over the last week, Sheffield Wednesday has received feedback from some supporters regarding Weekend Season Tickets, particularly in relation to what happens when games are postponed.
Recent postponements and the potential for further matches being moved due to FA Cup games has highlighted issues for Weekend Season Ticket holders. Therefore the club has decided to review current policy and the Weekend Season Ticket product.
To our knowledge, Sheffield Wednesday are the only club in the Football League to offer a Weekend Season Ticket, which has been available since the 2009/10 season. Being a unique product, there was no precedent on how such a product would work practically and no best practice available with regards to policies relating to Weekend Season Tickets. Inevitably, we would get some things right and we would also find things which needed to be reviewed based on issues arising during the life of the product.
Weekend Season Tickets were made available specifically to help supporters who live a distance away from Hillsborough and cannot necessarily attend midweek games. Its purpose was always to provide an entitlement for those fans to attend any league matches scheduled on a Saturday, Sunday or Bank Holiday. It was never intended to provide entitlements to specific fixtures, a specific number of fixtures or against specific teams. We introduced the product in good faith on this basis.
A major issue with providing Weekend Season Tickets has always been that games can be postponed for various reasons and therefore it is difficult to set prices for this product. This is compounded by the fact that Season Ticket pricing is set before the fixture list is announced and therefore Weekend Season Ticket pricing has to be based on an estimate of how many games may be played on weekend or Bank Holiday, using information from recent seasons. However as we have found recently this can also be dependent upon which league you are in with League 1 and 2 having no international breaks and therefore fewer midweek fixtures.
Unfortunately, no guarantee can be placed on how many matches may need to be rescheduled and therefore a Weekend Season Ticket would always need to be a 'fluid' product. We have always had a policy in place regarding postponements, which is that any matches rescheduled from a weekend to midweek are no longer included for Weekend Season Ticket holders, however any games which are switched from a weekday to a weekend would be included.
This approach was stated in advance on information with Weekend Season Tickets through the official website and we felt it was the fairest way of handling any such situation. A major consideration we had to give when pricing the product was that full Season Ticket holders always get the best value for games across the season, whilst balancing that with ensuring Weekend Season Ticket holders get better value than a casual fan who attends on a match-by-match basis. In practicality, this is a very difficult task.
However, due to the recent exceptional circumstances we have now decided to lift this policy and will ensure that for the current season any Weekend Season Ticket holders will be able to attend any rescheduled league matches that were originally arranged for a Weekend or Bank Holiday and will instead take place midweek.
This means that Weekend Season Ticket holders will now also be able to attend the Yeovil Town match on Tuesday 25 January and Peterborough United on Tuesday 15 March. No other alternatives will be offered to Weekend Season Ticket holders who cannot attend the rescheduled games.
Through beginning to review the product, we have identified a number of other potential issues with Weekend Season Tickets.
Being a niche product there has been a very small take up for the product with only 332 supporters buying for the current season. This is of concern as Weekend Season Tickets are a very high maintenance product which has a significant cost to provide to supporters through manual processes involved and ongoing technical development.
Additionally, it has been identified that over two-thirds of current Weekend Season Ticket holders live within the local Sheffield area. Whilst some of these holders will have genuine reasons for requiring a weekend-only ticket, a significant number of those supporters would normally have bought a full Season Ticket and the club has lost revenue based on them effectively 'downgrading' their ticket.
It is proving extremely difficult to identify ongoing processes that are fair to all supporters regarding Weekend Season Tickets. Any solutions proposed for this product so far have resulted in the value of a full Season Ticket being eroded, Weekend Season Ticket holders losing value or the club losing revenue. Therefore we have withdrawn the product from sale pending a full product review. Unfortunately it is not envisaged that Weekend Season Tickets will be made available again for the 2011/12 season.
Any 2011/12 Weekend Season Tickets that have already been purchased will be honoured for next season on the same basis that holders can attend any rearranged midweek league matches that are originally scheduled for a weekend when the fixtures are released. However, no further sales for this item will be allowed, with immediate effect.
Sheffield Wednesday are committed to providing the best products and service for supporters and the needs of the business. We trust this information fully clarifies the situation and outlines the club's' position and reasoning.
Recently we have reviewed full Season Tickets in order to simplify the offering and ensure that our products meet the needs of both supporters and the club. This has resulted in all prices of full Season Tickets for the 2011/12 season being reduced or frozen.
