Sheffield Wednesday agreed a deal to sign international goalkeeper Chris Kirkland in July 2012.

Kirkland put pen to paper on a two-year contract at Hillsborough.

The England cap began his career with Coventry City and soon became one of the most sought after young shot-stoppers in the country.

Premiership giants Liverpool paid £6m for his signature and he played a key role in the Reds' Champions League group games of 2004-05 before they lifted the trophy in Istanbul.

Kirkland enjoyed loan spells with West Brom and Wigan and signed a permanent deal with the Latics, going on to make 120 senior appearances for the North West side.

He scooped the Players' Player of the Year and Media Player of the Year awards in 2007-08.

Internationally, the 31-year-old won eight caps for the England Under-21s and was a regular feature in the senior squad thereafter, earning his maiden full cap against Greece.

Kirkland was an ever-present for Wednesday in 2012/13, playing every minute of the Owls' 46 Championship fixtures.
