Club captain Glenn Loovens signed a new two and a half year contract with Sheffield Wednesday in January 2016.

The Dutch defender committed his future to the Owls with his original deal due to expire in summer 2016.

He is now contracted to Wednesday until the summer of 2018.

Loovens has proved a dominant figure at the heart of the defence, making 77 appearances since signing on a free transfer in November 2013.

He has made 23 appearances for the club so far this campaign and has formed resolute partnerships alongside Tom Lees, Michael Turner and Vincent Sasso.

The 32-year-old made his debut with Feyenoord in his homeland of Holland and played a key role in their UEFA Cup-winning season of 2001/02.

After a successful loan spell at Championship side Cardiff City, Loovens turned his temporary move permanent and went on to make 113 appearances for the Bluebirds.

In the summer of 2008, the centre half transferred to Scottish Premier League giants Celtic where he won the title, the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup during a four-year stay.

In 2012, the Dutchman spent a year in Spain with Real Zaragoza and made 24 appearances for the La Liga outfit.

Loovens has also been capped twice by the Netherlands national team and debuted in a 3-0 victory over Japan in 2010.
