Match Reports

Report: Wednesday 2-1 Forest

24 September 2016

The Owls came from behind once more to post three points against Nottingham Forest – with Kieran Lee at the double on his 150th appearance for the club.

Henri Lansbury gave the Midlanders a first half lead but Wednesday hit back in the second period, with Lee on target twice and the winner coming in the 90th minute.

Overall, the Owls deserved the victory having dominated much of the game but Forest presented a resolute line of defence from the first whistle.

It was all Wednesday from the off as the hosts were in the driving seat, forcing the Reds on the back foot.

Ross Wallace unleashed from distance and Vladimir Stojkovic parried to safety before Gary Hooper flashed a snapshot narrowly wide.

The Serbian keeper then thwarted Steven Fletcher with a reflex save and was fortunate to keep out Fernando Forestieri after spilling a Hooper header.

Wednesday continued to dominate as Forest were pinned in their own half - but when they did break out, the visitors made it count.

Against the run of play on 38 minutes, Lansbury tried his luck from 25 yards and the ball took a wicked deflection off the unfortunate Barry Bannan to loop up and over Keiren Westwood.

It was hard on the Owls, who would have to do it the hard way if they were to post a third successive win on home soil.

And Carlos Carvalhal’s side certainly started the second half with intent and came within a whisker of levelling just after the resumption when Hooper let fly but his goalbound effort cannoned off Chris Cohen to whistle agonisingly wide.

Hooper then came close to applying the finishing touch to a Fletcher feed but Forest broke moments later and Wednesday had Westwood to thank for a stunning save from Apostolos Vellios’ glancing header.

And that served as a timely platform for the equaliser on 68 minutes. Ross Wallace sent an accurate corner into the mix and Lee was on hand to head home from eight yards.

The Owls sensed a winner and Forestieri slalomed through the Reds’ defence only to be denied at the last before Cohen anticipated a clever Wallace chip to head off the line.

Wednesday pressed to the final moments and got their reward in the last minute when the advancing Lee slotted home in front of the Kop from a low Fletcher cross.

Wednesday: Westwood, Hunt, Lees (Loovens 59), Hutchinson, Reach, Wallace, Lee, Bannan (Abdi 72), Forestieri, Fletcher, Hooper (Nuhiu 82)
