Wednesday exited the Emirates FA Cup at the fifth round stage, beaten 2-0 by Swansea as the Premier League side won at the second attempt.

Second half goals from Jordan Ayew and Nathan Dyer saw the Swans through to the quarter finals on a bitterly cold night in Wales.

The hosts deserved the victory overall, asking most of the questions of an Owls side that continues to feel the effect of losing key players to injury.

While they battled gamely at the Liberty Stadium, Wednesday struggled to fashion chances, while Swansea converted the two that mattered the most.

Carlos Carvalhal’s team dominated the early possession, albeit without making a real impression in the final third.

The Swans passed the ball around well but the first clear incision of note fell to the Owls half an hour in.

A quick build-up on the counter saw Jacob Butterfield take aim from 25 yards and his curling drive was acrobatically saved by Kristoffer Nordfeldt.

The Swedish keeper was then called into action moments later, palming a Lucas Joao cross cum shot wide for a corner.

Joao then forced Nordfeldt into further intervention as the Owls threatened on the break.

At the other end, Cameron Dawson was off his line sharply to thwart the advancing Dyer before Ki Sung-yeung unleashed a low drive just past the upright.

Swansea made a double substitution at half time, introducing Martin Olsson and Jordan Ayew from the bench – and the latter made the breakthrough on 55 minutes.

Tom Carroll struck a whistling shot from range that hit both posts, falling kindly for Ayew to slot home.

That gave the Swans the platform required to keep hold of the ball and run the clock down, which they duly did, until they made the game safe with ten minutes to go.

Tammy Abraham slotted Dyer in on goal on the angle and the wideman drilled hard and low past Dawson to take Swansea to the last eight of the cup.
