Owls set for Portimonense test

18 July 2017

Carlos Carvalhal believes the Owls have the right blend of pre-season games during the week in Portugal.

Wednesday face two Portuguese top flight sides in Portimonense and Vitoria Setubal and lower league opposition SC Farense.

With regard to the Primeira Liga duo in particular, Carlos says the systems and styles in which they operate will provide a good test to his players, as he explained:

“It will be good for us. Portimonense play in the first league now, Farense is a team that play in another division and we also play Vitoria Setubal who are from the Portugal Primeira also.

“They will be interesting games against teams who try to play.

“With the system and way that they play, they are similar to some teams in the Championship in this moment, maybe 50 per cent play the same kind of game.”

Portimonense – who gained promotion to the top flight last season - are the first opposition on Wednesday at Estádio Municipal de Albufeira (7.00pm).

Carlos added: “It will be a good experience to all of us and we can enjoy these kind of games, as can our fans because we know they come to the Algarve to support us.”

Report: Portimonense 0-1 Wednesday

19 July 2017

The Owls stepped up their pre-season preparations in the Portugal sun with a 1-0 win over newly-promoted Portimonense.

Adam Reach stole the show with a stunning first half hit that put Wednesday en route to their third win from three friendlies so far.

And Carlos Carvalhal’s men were good value for victory having taken the game to Portimonense from the first whistle.

The Owls dominated possession and after Reach tested Ricardo Ferreira from distance, the former Middlesbrough man went one better on 25 minutes.

Morgan Fox and George Boyd linked well and the ball fell to Reach, who drilled superbly into the top corner, giving Ferreira no chance.

The hosts battled gamely to press forward but Wednesday kept possession well, frustrating last season’s champions of the Portuguese second tier.

But right on half time, Portimonense gave the Owls a scare when Sa unleashed a thunderbolt from all of 30 yards that just cleared the crossbar.

Both sides made a raft of substitutions in the second half which altered the course of the contest, with fitness levels taking precedence.

Portimonense showed more in the final third and saw a golden chance to equalise go begging just past the hour.

Bruno Tabata did everything right advancing on Keiren Westwood but the wideman’s shot curled the wrong side of the post.

Fernando Forestieri fired wide at the other end before Gary Hooper was denied at close range, which proved the last of the action as the sun came down at the Estadio Municipal Stadium on the Algarve.

Wednesday: Westwood, Hunt, Lees, Pudil, Fox, Boyd (Wallace 66), Bannan (Abdi 66), Jones (Hutchinson 66), Reach (Hooper 46), Winnall (Forestieri 46), Rhodes (Nuhiu 75)
