Match preview: Owls v Everton

The Owls’ focus switches to the Carabao Cup this evening where they host Everton in the third round.

Wednesday defeated Rotherham 1-0 to reach this stage of the competition with Atdhe Nuhiu’s stoppage time goal the difference at the New York Stadium last month.

Everton advanced to round three after overcoming Lincoln 4-2 at Sincil Bank.

The Toffees had to come from behind after the Imps opened the scoring inside the first minute but goals from Lucas Digne, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Alex Iwobi and Richarlison saw the Premier League side go through.

Marco Silva is likely to name a strong line-up as Everton bid to bounce back from successive league defeats, that have left them 14th in the table.

Team news

SWFC: Owls captain Tom Lees (hamstring) will be assessed ahead of the game.

There are no fresh injury or suspension concerns for Wednesday following the 1-1 draw with Fulham at the weekend.

Fernando Forestieri will serve the third game of his six-match suspension.

On the back of the Owls’ fightback against the Cottagers three days ago, manager Garry Monk may opt to make changes for tonight’s cup clash.

Everton: Andre Gomes (rib injury) and Jean-Philippe Gbamin (thigh) are ruled out for the Toffees.

Goalkeeper Jonas Lossl (calf) is closing in on his return to the squad.

Match format

Should the score be level at full time, the game will go straight to a penalty shootout.

Supporters are advised there will be no ticket sales available on the turnstiles this evening.

Tickets for the game can be purchased in advance for all home areas of the stadium.

The Ticket Office is open until kick-off at 7.45pm.

There will be no access to the South and North Stands from Leppings Lane and exiting the North Stand is via Penistone Road only.

Penistone Road will be closed on both carriageways from 9.30pm up to an hour after the final whistle.

The exception are disabled supporters and one carer, who can gain entry from Leppings Lane through the blue gate to the South Stand underpass.

Disabled supporters will also be allowed exit onto Leppings Lane at the end of the game from the South Stand underpass but not the North Stand.

Safety

Sheffield Wednesday are reminding supporters of their conduct whilst following the team both at Hillsborough and away from home.

The launching of missiles from the stands, including pyrotechnics, are criminal offences and the club have a zero tolerance policy to these.

Report: Wednesday 0-2 Everton

Four times Everton have played Wednesday in the League Cup and four times they have emerged triumphant following this 2-0 win at Hillsborough.

An early double from Dominic Calvert-Lewin did the damage and although the Owls rallied to give a good account of themselves thereafter, the ask was too great.

Wednesday created the best chances over the course of the contest but the Toffees took theirs and advanced to round four.

Right back at the start, though, it was almost the perfect opening for the Owls inside two minutes. Sam Winnall pounced on a Tom Davies backpass but England keeper Jordan Pickford showed his quality to deal with the danger.

And Wednesday were made to pay as the Toffees hit a quickfire double that gave the hosts a mountain to climb.

First, on six minutes, Richarlison swung a sweeping ball to Calvert-Lewin just inside the area on the angle and the striker executed a vicious drive that thundered in off the underside of the crossbar.

Then, three minutes later, it was 2-0 when Alex Iwobi motored into the danger area from the left, drew the last line, and placed a low feed that left Calvert-Lewin with the simple task of tapping into an empty net.

Richarlison headed inches wide before the quarter of an hour mark as the Owls were under the cosh and in need of relief from the Blues’ attacks.

And they so nearly got it 25 minutes in and this time Dominic Iorfa went close, nodding a back post effort just off target from a curling Adam Reach corner.

Reach then tested Pickford from six yards after good wing work from Jacob Murphy before Cameron Dawson kept Wednesday in the game with a stunning save to deny Calvert-Lewin a first half hat-trick.

Winnall found space on the edge of the box following the interval but shot too high and was unlucky to see a firm header fly inches over the frame of the goal.

The Owls certainly enjoyed more possession in the second half and Everton seemed content to sit back, absorb the pressure and play on the counter.

Djibril Sidibe sent a daisycutter whistling wide and so too did Lucas Digne but only on those two occasions did the visitors threaten through the second 45.

By and large, Wednesday probed and battled gamely to the final whistle but in the final analysis were left ruing the first ten minutes that ultimately settled the cup clash.

Tickets for this fixture are on sale now to Season Ticket holders and Members.

Season Ticket holders have until today (Wednesday) at 5.00pm to claim their seat for the Carabao Cup clash with Everton.

From Thursday 12 September at 9.00am, all unclaimed seats will be made available for general sale.

Prices are as follows in all areas of the stadium:

Adults: £20
Over 65s/under-21s: £15
Under 17s: £10
Under 11s: £5

Please note that Season Ticket holders can only activate their Season Ticket card when purchasing the same seat, if a different seat is chosen the upload to card feature will not be available.

Once tickets are on general sale fans will not be able to load their ticket to their season card.

Due to the current restrictions in place on the North Stand, there are no additional seats available to purchase in this area of the ground.

Tickets are only available for fans with Season Tickets in the North Stand to claim their seat. Should any seats not be taken they will also then become available to buy at general sale on 12 September.
