Report: Stoke 1-0 Wednesday

16 February 2021

Steven Fletcher bit the hand that fed as his late goal gave Stoke a 1-0 win over Wednesday.

The former Owls striker had the final say on a low key clash at the bet365 Stadium, where the hosts were good value for the win.

Wednesday were strong at the back but never really got going higher up the pitch and the Potters ultimately took advantage.

Stoke asked most of the early questions but only after Jordan Rhodes was not too far away with a snapshot from Barry Bannan’s cross.

The Owls had their moments, albeit brief, and Liam Shaw shaved the top of the crossbar following a Bannan corner, although the whistle was blown for an infringement.

Rhodes headed a Kadeem Harris feed into the grateful arms of Angus Gunn, while Jacob Brown might have capitalised at the other end after darting into the box but the shot lacked real purchase.

The first half then petered out if truth be told, with little action of note, but Stoke sought to inject life into the contest immediately after the resumption.

And after a purple patch of dominance, Nick Powell was presented with a clear opportunity on the angle only to see Keiren Westwood parry to safety.

James McClean tried his luck from range but the ball sailed over the top before Fletcher was thwarted by a Tom Lees block in sight of goal.

Joe Allen slammed a low drive wide as the Potters turned the screw, pushing Wednesday further and further back.

And the fatal blow was delivered on 84 minutes when Fletcher, lurking in the six-yard box, reacted to a deep cross headed back across goal to slot home the winner.

Wednesday: Westwood, Harris, Urhoghide (Windass 88), Lees, Dunkley (Pelupessy 65), Hutchinson, Reach, Bannan, Shaw, Paterson, Rhodes (Kachunga 65)
