Report: Wednesday 2-0 Doncaster

14 August 2021

Football as we know it returned and so too did three points for Wednesday as our first home league game of the season saw Doncaster beaten 2-0.

Quickfire second half goals from Barry Bannan and Dennis Adeniran gave the Owls a deserved win and patience was key as the hosts knocked and knocked until the door finally swung open after the break.

Omar Bogle missed a late penalty to end any prospect of a Rovers comeback and the derby plaudits stayed in S6.

Roared on by a thriving three sides of Hillsborough, Wednesday were straight out on the front foot, pressing and harrying Rovers, forcing the visitors deep into their own half.

Chances were few and far between, though, and conversely it was Doncaster that truly threatened first on the quarter-hour mark.

Little seemed on for Dan Gardner when he took possession just outside the box but the forward unleased a vicious drive that whistled narrowly past the top corner.

Back came Wednesday driving forward and the same pattern developed – domination of possession but Rovers looking lively on the counter.

And on 32 minutes Doncaster spurned the best chance of an entertaining first half when Tiago Cukur spooned over the bar after taking a terrific through ball from Ethan Galbraith.

The opening period ended with Bannan inches away from a dipping set piece and Bailey Peacock-Farrell keeping out Kyle Knoyle’s shot at the other end moments later.

That was the nature of an end to end contest and the Owls tried to put down a marker from the restart as Lewis Wing forced Pontus Dahlberg into a fingertip save.

Wing’s quick thinking free kick then sent Andre Green in on goal but Dahlberg dashed off his line to deal with the danger.

Kamberi nodded just over from Marvin Johnson’s dinked cross, which proved the latter’s final involvement as Darren Moore made a double change.

Lee Gregory and Jaden Brown came on to liven up the final third and Wednesday struck on 71 minutes.

Bannan was afforded room taking the ball 20 yards out and the skipper beautifully picked his spot past the despairing Dahlberg.

And three minutes later, the game was all but put out of Rovers’ reach as Adeniran doubled the lead.

Brown surged to the byline, his cross was only parried by Dahlberg into the path of Adeniran and the energetic midfielder did the honours off the post from close range.

Doncaster were thrown a lifeline three minutes from time when Dominic Iorfa was adjudged to have handled in the area but Bogle hit the post to cap a complete afternoon for Wednesday.

Wednesday: Peacock-Farrell, Hunt, Hutchinson, Iorfa, Palmer, Green (Byers 70) Bannan, Wing, Adeniran, Johnson (Brown 60), Kamberi (Gregory 60)
