Match preview: Shrewsbury v Owls

1 January 2022

MATCH DETAILS
Sunday 2 January
League One
3:00pm
Montgomery Waters Meadow

We begin the New Year with a trip to Shrewsbury this coming Sunday, 2 January.

For Wednesday, the emphasis will be on producing a big performance and reaction following our defeat to Sunderland in midweek.

The Owls’ long unbeaten run, stretching all the way back to October, was ended at the Stadium of Light.

Shrewsbury have hit good form of late and are climbing the table after a bleak start to their campaign.

Steve Cotterill’s side lost the opening four league fixtures and occupied a spot in the relegation zone for much of the first half of the season.

But the Shrews are on the rise and now sit in 16th spot and six points clear of the drop zone after just two defeats in their last seven outings and head into the clash with the Owls unbeaten in three.

TEAM NEWS

Owls: Chey Dunkley left the action early at Sunderland on Thursday after feeling a tightness in his hamstring.

Josh Windass missed out completely at the Stadium of Light with a minor strain and will be assessed ahead of the game on Sunday.

There was positive news on Sam Hutchinson this week as Darren Moore confirmed he is back training with the squad at Middlewood Road and nearing a return to action.

Massimo Luongo will serve the final game of a three-match ban.

Shrewsbury: Arron Pierre and Khanya Leshabela were unavailable last time out for the Shrews after testing positive for COVID-19.

Midfielder Shaun Whalley is sidelined until February after tearing a leg muscle in training last month.

COVID-19 AND BOOSTER JABS

Supporters of both clubs will have the opportunity to receive a COVID vaccination, be it first, second or a booster on Sunday.

Between 10:30am and 3:30pm, the ‘vaccination bus’, situated in the neighbouring Lidl Car Park on approach to the stadium, will be offering jabs to fans.

All supporters due their booster – or indeed a first or second jab – are being encouraged to seize the opportunity on Sunday.

PLAN B

As the capacity at Montgomery Waters Meadow falls just below the threshold of 10,000, COVID-19 certification and negative lateral flow tests are not mandatory in order to enter the stadium.

However, we encourage our supporters to take all necessary precautions to stay as safe as possible, including taking a LFT ahead of the game.

Face coverings should be worn in all indoor areas.
