All set for Owls v Gillingham

After the midweek success in the Papa John’s Trophy, Wednesday return to league action on Saturday.

Heading into the game, the Owls are two points outside the play-off spots and have hit a resilient patch of form.

Gillingham are one point and two places above the drop zone at this early stage in the season.

REMEMBRANCE DAY FIXTURE

This is our designated Remembrance league fixture. Our shirts will display a poppy and the game will commence following a bugle rendition of ‘The Last Post’ and a minute’s silence.

The match-worn shirts will be made available to purchase in a live auction straight from kick-off, with proceeds going to the Royal British Legion.

- The Owls have 10 clean sheets in all competitions this season – third highest from the top four tiers

TEAM NEWS

Owls: Bailey Peacock-Farrell is with Northern Ireland on international duty which means Joe Wildsmith, who turned in a fantastic midweek display against Harrogate, will get the nod between the sticks.

Massimo Luongo and George Byers are available for selection having made their comeback in the midweek Papa John’s Trophy clash.

Josh Windass is back on the grass training with the squad as the forward edges closer to a return.

Dominic Iorfa (hip) will spend a period of time on the sidelines. The defender picked up the impact injury in our recent fixture with Lincoln and is expected to be out until the New Year.

Sam Hutchinson and Lewis Gibson remain unavailable.

Gillingham: The visitors this weekend have injury concerns to contend with.

Ryan Jackson, Robbie McKenzie and Rhys Bennett are all injury doubts after picking up knocks at the weekend.

Mustapha Carayol (illness) could return to action at Hillsborough.

Stuart O’Keefe (hamstring) may return while Max Ehmer is a doubt after picking up knock last time out.

The Ticket Office and Megastore will open at 9.00am until kick-off, then re-open for 45 minutes after the final whistle. Tickets are available in all areas of the ground, priced from £19 for adult Members and £5 for under 11 Members.

PRE-PAID TICKET COLLECTION

Supporters who opt to collect tickets from the Ticket Office can do so until 1.15pm.

Thereafter, all North Stand/Kop ticket holders go to Gate 18 and South Stand/Grandstand holders from the South Stand Ticket Office.

Gillingham have sold just under 600 tickets. Visiting supporters will be able to purchase on the day from turnstile 20.

Report: Wednesday 1-1 Gillingham

The Owls’ unbeaten run continues but how one point was not all three at Hillsborough on Saturday represents the story of the game.

Wednesday dominated Gillingham in all areas, came back from a sucker punch, but could not land the knockout blow.

To compound matters it was former Owls academy striker Vadaine Oliver who bit the hand that once fed before Florian Kamberi eventually equalised.

It could and should have been more but for all their possession, the hosts fell short of conjuring a vital second goal.

It was all Wednesday from the off and one inventive move was a lick of paint away from yielding the opener.

Theo Corbeanu, impressive throughout, played a clever feed to Fisayo Dele-Bashiru down the right and his low cross was backheeled against the woodwork via the improvisation of Callum Paterson.

The Owls pressed and certainly seemed the more likely but were caught cold by Gillingham’s first real attack, which paid dividends 20 minutes in.

Bailey Akehurst’s set piece was flicked on from the edge of the box and Oliver found space to pick up, look up and stroke into the far corner.

Wednesday regrouped and piled on the pressure – Barry Bannan saw a glancing header deflected wide and Corbeanu was twice denied by keeper Jamie Cumming from identical angled hits.

The second half was a blueprint of the first, with Wednesday asking all the questions. Prime outlet Corbeanu fizzed a low cross right into the mix that just missed the onrushing attackers and Kamberi headed another Corbeanu feed over.

Darren Moore introduced Saido Berahino from the bench and the Burundi international played a key role in a move that ended with Patterson slamming yet another Corbeanu feed past the post.

A goal was coming and duly arrived on 76 minutes. Bannan unleased a fierce drive that Cumming could only parry – right into the path of the lurking Kamberi, who was left with the simple task of finding the unguarded net from close range.

Moments later, it was almost 2-1. Marvin Johnson delivered a teasing ball from the left that evaded a raft of bodies and was on its way in until Jack Tucker hooked off the line.

The visitors were pinned into their own half for the remainder of a one-sided contest but try as they might - especially Corbeanu, whose dipping volley with two minutes to go fell agonisingly the wrong side of the upright - the Owls could not muster a winner and had to settle for a point.
