Match Reports

Report: Cambridge 1-1 Wednesday

19 October 2021

Wednesday hit back at Cambridge to pick up a deserved point courtesy of Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s maiden senior goal.

The Owls trailed to George Williams' first half strike but a much-improved performance after the break yielded a share of the spoils.

Dele-Bashiru netted late in an entertaining contest played in awful weather, adding to his impressive display at Wimbledon at the weekend.

Windy conditions made the passing games of both sides difficult from kick-off and it was no surprise to see what seemed routine crosses hang in the air.

But Cambridge adapted better and pieced together a promising move eight minutes in that saw Sam Smith break free into the box but Chey Dunkley did well to motor across and divert the danger.

The home side pressed on and carved two quickfire openings – Joe Ironside headed onto the roof of the net and Williams was not too far away from range.

52.jpg

The pressure paid dividends as the U’s took the lead on 19 minutes. Jack Ardale’s corner was as accurate as it was inviting and Williams glanced into the bottom corner from six yards.

The Owls were limited to two sights on goal in the latter stages of the first half and might easily have headed down the tunnel on terms.

First, Barry Bannan sent Lewis Wing scampering through on goal but Dimitar Mitov was off his line swiftly to smother.

57.jpg

Then the keeper was beaten moments later by a Dele-Bashiru snapshot but was relieved to see the ball smash against the post and rebound to safety.

Wednesday opened the second half with more purpose and only a finely timed challenge from Lloyd Jones thwarted Lee Gregory as the striker pulled the trigger in the penalty area.

Bannan dictated play from the engine room and almost caught Mitov napping himself with a speculative long ranger that the U’s keeper scooped around the post.

63.jpg

Bannan went closer still a few minutes later directly from a corner and Cambridge had Smith to thank for heading off the line with Mitov beaten.

It was all Wednesday as Cambridge were on the back foot - Marvin Johnson was kept out by Mitov at his near post and the shot-stopper promptly climbed off the turf to deny Gregory.

But the hosts finally cracked with 10 minutes to go as the Owls deservedly drew level. Dele-Bashiru took possession from Saido Berahino and burst into the box on the angle before firing a low drive across Mitov and in.

Wednesday went for the kill and only a spectacular Mitov save from Liam Palmer’s header kept Cambridge in a game that in truth could have gone either way.

Wednesday: Peacock-Farrell, Hunt (Shodipo 71), Iorfa, Dunkley, Palmer, Johnson, Dele-Bashiru, Bannan, Wing (Adeniran 58), Paterson (Berahino 58), Gregory
