Match Reports

Report: Wednesday 1-1 Lincoln

23 October 2021

Lincoln hit a late equaliser to deny Wednesday all three points at Hillsborough on Saturday.

The Owls led through Dennis Adeniran in the second half following a forgettable opening 45 but with the hosts heading for the win, Lewis Montsma levelled with 10 minutes to go.

The Imps deserved something from the contest in truth and the honours might have gone either way but both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils from a relatively balanced contest overall.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell was called into action 11 minutes in when Anthony Scully darted towards goal on the angle and the Owls keeper came out on top.

Wednesday worked Josh Griffiths at the other end as Lee Gregory was a whisker away from collecting Saido Berahino’s slide rule feed 10 yards out.

The Imps had a penalty claim waved away after Scully tumbled in the area under a double challenge from Liam Palmer and Marvin Johnson and the visitors did look the more likely.

52.jpg

But it was the Owls that created the best chance of a low key first half six minutes before the break. Berahino advanced on goal from the left of the area and lashed a low drive that Griffiths did well to divert at his near post.

The game needed a second half spark and Lincoln came close to providing it straight after the resumption when Regan Poole crossed from the right and the on-rushing Scully just failed to make a connection in the six-yard box.

But it was Wednesday that broke the deadlock, with Adeniran on target for his third goal of the season. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru menacingly moved forward and unleased a long-ranger that Griffiths could only parry and Adeniran hooked into the unguarded goal.

59.jpg

The Owls clicked into gear and began to stamp their authority on the game, keeping the ball well while asking questions of the Lincoln backline.

Dele-Bashiru embarked on one mazy run to which Lincoln had no answer and the only thing missing was the finish as the midfielder’s effort drifted beyond the far post.

Dominic Iorfa shot wide after powering upfield before Wednesday were caught by a sucker punch with 80 minutes on the clock.

62.jpg

Poole’s corner was inviting, right into the danger zone, and Montsma glanced a low header home in front of the travelling fans from Lincolnshire that gave their side a point.

Wednesday: Peacock-Farrell, Hunt, Palmer, Iorfa, Johnson, Brown (Shodipo 87), Bannan, Adeniran, Dele-Bashiru, Berahino (Corbeanu 81), Gregory (Paterson 61)
