Match Reports

Report: Ipswich 1-1 Wednesday

25 September 2021

Wednesday were a minute away from a return to winning ways at Ipswich but caught cold at the death to allow the hosts a point.

Dennis Adeniran’s delicious first half hit appeared to have settled an entertaining game that in truth could have gone either way.

But although the points were shared, Ipswich will feel it went their way as substitute Conor Chaplin climbed off the bench to level in stoppage time.

The contest was off to a flyer when the hosts squandered a golden opportunity inside the first five minutes.

Skipper and top scorer Macauley Bonne burst free of the Owls’ backline and perhaps had too much time to ponder as his tame shot was straight at the out-rushing Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

That gave the hosts a boost, though, and Wes Burns darted into the danger area on the angle but his low cross was off point.

Burns did have the ball in the net approaching midway in the first half, converting from close range, but a raised flag cut the Ipswich celebrations short.

Wednesday were by no means off the pace and slowly but surely began to show their measure – and duly got their reward.

Lee Gregory forced a smart save from Vaclav Hladky with a fierce snapshot on the turn but moments later the keeper was powerless to prevent the opening goal on 26 minutes.

52.jpg

Gregory cleverly chested back to Adeniran on the edge of the box and the midfield man showed skill and composure to execute a lofted volley out of Hladky’s reach.

The goal worked in Wednesday’s favour on the scoreboard and the pitch as they bossed possession for long periods.

Adeniran blazed over the bar from 18 yards as the Ipswich defence parted but the hosts did rally in the closing stages and may have counted themselves unfortunate on the overall balance to be trailing.

The Tractor Boys started the second half in confident mood, stroking the ball around nicely, albeit with little end product.

But they did look vulnerable on the break and breathed a sigh of relief on the hour when Liam Palmer appeared to be tripped by former Owl Matt Penney in the area and play was waved on.

Back came Ipswich and again Peacock-Farrell thwarted Bonne before Hutchinson did likewise with a crucial near post block.

Cameron Burgess glanced wide as the home side pressed for an equaliser, which came right at the last.

Bonne got his reward for an enterprising performance, nipping in to dispossess Peacock-Farrell and feed Scott Fraser, who squared for Chaplin to tuck into an empty net.

Wednesday: Peacock-Farrell, Palmer, Iorfa, Hutchinson, Johnson, Adeniran, Bannan (Paterson 67), Wing, Shodipo (Dele-Bashiru 69), Gregory, Berahino (Dunkley 85)
