THE MATCH

After three consecutive away fixtures, the Owls return to Hillsborough on Saturday for the clash with Lincoln.

Wednesday will be looking for a return to winning ways after three without victory but will be buoyed by the manner of the comeback in midweek at Cheltenham.

At 2-0 down with the clock ticking, the Owls produced a spirited fightback to leave with what could prove a crucial point.

Lincoln head to S6 comfortably in mid-table.

The Imps have proven a tough nut to crack in the third tier this season and have drawn more games than any other side – 18 in total with 13 of those on home soil.

Our previous fixture this season finished 1-1 at Sincil Bank.

TEAM NEWS

Wednesday: Jack Hunt (muscle) has been ruled out for a period of weeks.

Dominic Iorfa has been passed fit to play after picking up a slight knock at Cheltenham.

Lincoln: Sean Roughan (Republic of Ireland) and Carl Rushworth (England Under-21s) are back from international duty.

Match Reports

Report | Wednesday 1-1 Lincoln

1 April 2023

The Owls were left frustrated by draw specialists Lincoln, who posted their 19th stalemate of the season at Hillsborough.

Michael Smith put the hosts in front but Danny Mandroiu converted the Imps’ sole chance of the game to give his side a share of the spoils.

Wednesday enjoyed much of the possession but fell short of a winner, although the point was enough to return to the summit of League One.

Darren Moore’s men came out of the traps with real purpose and took the lead on 12 minutes. Will Vaulks picked out Smith in the box and the big man’s well-placed header gave Carl Rushworth no chance.

Lee Gregory volleyed into the side-netting on the angle as the Owls sought a second but they were instead caught on the counter 28 minutes in.

From the Imps’ first and only real attack of intent, Harry Boyes drove forward and hit a low shot from distance that David Stockdale saved but Mandroiu was on hand to mop up six yards out.

The leveller gave Lincoln a shot of confidence and Teddy Bishop crashed just wide before Wednesday had a burst of pressure with half time looming.

Barry Bannan was at the heart, prodding and probing, and the skipper executed a clever lob that Boyes headed clear almost on the line.

The Owls continued to press in the second half, pouring bodies forward. Smith latched on to a Liam Palmer feed over the top only to see Rushworth dash from his line to deal with the danger.

Mallik Wilks was introduced on the hour to spark the attack and it was one-way traffic, with Wednesday asking all the questions.

Smith was sent through by a trademark Bannan pass but Boyes did well to recover and Aden Flint darted in across Rushworth from a Vaulks free kick but narrowly missed the target.

Lincoln stayed on the back foot throughout the closing stages and the Owls went agonisingly close to victory right at the last when an Adam Jackson clearance off the line from Smith ensured the contest would finish all square.

Wednesday: Stockdale, Palmer, Iorfa (Wilks 60), Flint, Famewo, Johnson, Vaulks, James (Adeniran 82), Bannan, Gregory, Smith
