Match preview: MK Dons v Wednesday

5 August 2022

MK Dons v Wednesday
Saturday 6 August
Sky Bet League One

The Owls are on the road for the first time this season with a trip to StadiumMK.

Both Wednesday and MK Dons are looking for their first win of the new campaign.

Following a dramatic season-opener at Hillsborough, the points were shared between the Owls and Portsmouth in a six-goal thriller.

Meanwhile, Liam Manning’s side began 2022/23 with a 1-0 defeat away at Cambridge.

Wednesday: Michael Smith is set to miss out on Saturday. The striker has a minor injury sustained in pre-season and Darren Moore says the former Rotherham man will not be risked.

Callum Paterson is available for selection after missing out on the opening day against Portsmouth due to a minor knock in training.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru was substituted late in the clash with Pompey as a precaution but has trained all week and will be in the squad on Saturday.

Dennis Adeniran is also available for selection.

MK Dons: Josh McEachran (groin) will miss out after picking up an injury last weekend at Cambridge.

McEachran will join Daniel Harvie, Mo Eisa and Tennai Watson on the treatment table.

Match Reports

Report: MK Dons 0-1 Wednesday

6 August 2022

Wednesday’s campaign on the road is up and running with Josh Windass’ first half penalty enough to beat MK Dons.

Windass struck from 12 yards after being fouled in the area and his spot-kick proved decisive.

The goalkeepers had plenty of work to do and overall there was merit for both sides taking something from what at times was a stop-start game.

But it was the Owls that posted the points to build on the opening day draw with Portsmouth.

After veteran Dons defender Dean Lewington prevented a certain Barry Bannan goal in the opening seconds, the Owls took control of the opening 45.

Playing a quick passing game, Wednesday cut through the hosts’ defence at regular intervals, with that cutting edge the only thing missing in the final third.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Will Vaulks had similar half chances but just couldn’t get the right connection from the edge of the box.

But Windass got exactly that on 21 minutes from the spot. The same player was tripped in the box by Lewington and the striker dusted himself down and picked himself up to plant firmly past Jamie Cumming.

The Owls suffered a blow before the break when Akin Famewo limped from the action with what appeared a muscle injury and MK did enjoy better periods of possession, but Wednesday had the best opportunity ahead of the break when Dele-Bashiru forced Cumming into a flying save.

Substitute Jack Hunt powered forward early in the second half only to see his fierce hit deflected narrowly wide but Wednesday were on the front foot.

The Dons, though, hit back and came close to levelling on the hour. Twice they opened the door through Matt Smith and Lewington and twice it was slammed shut by the diving David Stockdale.

The Owls keeper then produced the best save of the match, leaping low to his right in spectacular fashion to divert a toe-poked effort from Dan Kemp.

MK enjoyed the better of the closing stages in terms of possession but produced little more to trouble the inspired Stockdale and Wednesday headed home with a maximum haul.

Wednesday: Stockdale, Palmer, Ihiekwe, Heneghan, Famewo (J Hunt 27), Johnson, Vaulks, Bannan (Byers 77), Dele-Bashiru, Paterson, Windass (Bakinson 77)
